Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende

RC 48869

In 1849 Eliza Sommers follows her fiancé to California, where he has gone in
search of gold. Her experiences in the harsh land gripped by gold fever
transform
her into an exceptional woman. She is befriended by a Chinese doctor who
teaches her about the human condition.
This book fell into the okay category for me. It was hard to stick with it
in the beginning and moved slowly. An interesting but not a gripping
novel. It also had a rather abrupt ending. I'd give this one a 2 out of 5.

Really, Carla? I liked the book, though I admit it wasn't as good as some of Isabel Allende's. Her most famous one (The House of Spirits) is also her best one, in my opinion. I also liked "The Infinite Plan" a lot. In general, I've been a fan of Allende's for years. This nicely connects with another current board post, by the way: the one about realism vs. naturalism. Allende is another big name in magic realism, which, as I said in the other position, I am much fonder of than I expected I would be.

thanks Susanne, I'll give her other books a try, it may just have been my mood.

Sounds good. The Realism in this book makes me want to read it.
